Sometimes Learning Myself Kind of Sucked

My parents loved to go on vacation without me.  Okay, I don’t know if love is the right word, but I don’t think they particularly missed me very much.   Back when there was still a gaggle of us rapscallions around, the road trip was THE thing to do during summer vacations.  The time honored tradition of shoving everything we owned into a small vehicle that we would then spend hours upon hours in was important in our household (and it was a good way to shut us up about being bored and tired of playing outside all the time). I…

A Penny Saved is Just a Penny but a Lot of Pennies is a Dollar

I have this penny that won’t go away.  I know that I should pick the damn thing up and put it in my son’s bank but for some reason I just leave it sitting there.  I mean, it’s to the point that I will be washing down my kitchen counters and I’ll just clean around it.  It would literally take me ten seconds to walk down the hall and place it in the bank, but I just don’t want to do it.  It made me stop and think about why that is. The easy thing would be to say that…

A Good Day or Not? The Jury’s Still Out on This One

The day started off great.  I had a kid that was eager to get out of bed and go to school and I had a new, firm resolve to follow the new eating plan I had put together the night before.  The sun was shining and I felt okay enough about myself to put on another short sleeved shirt to wear to work instead of resorting to a button up with long sleeves.  The sun was shining and the mountains looked spectacular and I was just ready to take on the world.  If I could have lifted my ass into…

Mini Musings- Getting Attention

Hello to all my lovely online friends, Today has been a rather strange day for me when it comes to writing on my blog.  Last night I was gung-ho about my new piece (voted on by various readers) “I Want Your Attention but Stop Looking at Me!”  I had a hard time getting started and I basically ended up banishing myself to a world with no sleep until I could get something down on paper.  Lo and behold I got my groove on and I was enjoying the writing process again.  After a few hundred words  I decided that I…

As Real as Unreal Gets

It’s sometimes hard for people to tell, but I know that television isn’t real.  I mean, I can’t have a normal conversation in my own life without invoking some quote, idea, or concept that I picked up from a show on television.  Doesn’t even have to be a good program, just one that grabs my attention for that two seconds to be imprinted on my brain.  It’s a damn nuisance too, because I can’t remember what I did three hours ago, but I can tell you what Phil was wearing when the first place team came in to win the…

Am I Really Getting off the Couch for This?

Tomorrow is the big day, everybody.  Wish me luck!  Thought I would repost, even though it’s not so terribly old… I get it!  I get it.  You want me to work out.  And by “you” I mean every person that has been sending emails, facebook advertisements, Groupon and livingsocial deals inviting me to run, play, jump and climb on various types of courses and equipment.  And you found your target audience– yay you!  The only way you’re going to get me to join any exercising event is by adding tons of toys and costumes that deflect from the fact that…

I’m Coming to Get You, Al Roker

Things to do in New York for your very first visit: Visit Central Park, ride the Staten Island Ferry and try to get face time on the Today Show.  When the hubby and I finally got the chance to visit The City that Never Sleeps we made sure that we did all three.  Getting to Central Park was very easy and quite a lovely experience and riding the ferry was a beautiful moment (the Manhattan skyline is an absolute marvel). However, getting on the Today Show was a bit of a (cold) pain in the ass.  So, yes, it kind…

Hey, What’s Up With Dancing Sign Guy?

After the sixth red light in a row that I have had to stop and cool my heels, I see Dancing Sign Guy. He’s out on his corner spinning his cardboard sign around and around until it looks like he might catch air and start flying into the sky. I’m curious about what he has to say, but I can’t read the stinking sign. Hey, Dancing Sign Guy, calm down a minute so I can see what you’re peddling! He never makes eye-contact with me or anyone else. His baseball cap is pulled low over his brow and it is…

Do They Even Have Candy Stripers Anymore?

I’ve never been one of those people that has to be busy every minute of the day. In fact, I would say I have probably been the exact opposite—if I didn’t have to go to work every day, my living room would be a re-creation of Jabba’s palace.   In other words,  I am perfectly happy sitting on the couch and watching television while the world goes on around me.  Sometimes I can be persuaded into reading a book or two instead, but that doesn’t happen for me so much anymore.  Not enough good books to read? Sure, let’s go with…

I Never Pass Up a Chance to Talk

Fair Warning-This exercise is in response to a fellow blogger @afternoonofsundries who asked me to participate in a challenge requesting I list ten things I love and ten things I hate, as a way to get to know me better.  Don’t read unless you really, really want to know more about me. First of all, thank you for asking me to participate.  I appreciate that you have read my blog and that you think I have things to say that you might find interesting. I’m actually pretty excited to do this because it makes me feel like I finally made it…
